Press Release: I-69 CONSTRUCTION CAUSING SEVERE PROBLEMS IN SOUTHERN INDIANA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

I-69 CONSTRUCTION CAUSING SEVERE PROBLEMS IN SOUTHERN INDIANA

CONTACTS:

Thomas Tokarski. Citizens for Appropriate Rural Roads, Inc.
812-825-9555

Bill Boyd. Greene County Farmer Affected by I-69.
317-538-7894

Darrell Breeden. Daviess County Resident. 812-320-6374

I-69 construction and related activities have created extremely dangerous traffic hazards and property damage in Greene and Daviess Counties. CARR and the I-69 Accountability Project, Inc. Ask Governor Daniels for an immediate and complete shutdown of all work on I-69 until these problems are investigated and remedied.

I-69 work is creating conditions that have led to deaths, severe injuries and extreme damage to property and aquifers in Daviess and Greene Counties.

ACCIDENTS.
On October 10, 2011, three Daviess County citizens were killed when a truck, hauling gravel for I-69 construction, slammed into two disabled vans, killing the two occupants of the vans and a farmer who was assisting at the scene.

On October 31, 2011, four people were seriously hurt when two trucks collided head-on near the US-231 interchange that is under construction for I-69. A local resident confirmed that the accident occurred in the work zone for I-69. This site was the scene of another accident on 14
October, 2011.

Other accidents have occurred near the intersection of US-231 and SR-58 where the I-69 interchange is being constructed. This congested area does not have proper warning signs and safety procedures in the construction zone are not being followed. We call upon INDOT to immediately stop work in the area of the SR 231 interchange and investigate what
is causing these accidents.

EROSION.
Severe erosion is occurring in I-69 construction zones near the Daviess and Greene County line. Construction activities have also opened up and are possibly draining an aquifer at the site.

Two water wells in the area have gone dry, and others may be threatened. Adjacent wetlands may also be affected if the water table is drawn down.

We ask that work in this area be stopped and an independent hydrologist be brought in to assess the situation.

INDOT has frequently asserted that the construction of I-69 is "ahead of schedule and under budget." We are concerned that this frenzied rush to complete the highway to US-231 in Greene County before Governor Daniels leaves office is endangering public health and safety, leading to the destruction of valuable natural resources and creating
situations that will lead to many more problems in the future.

Thomas Tokarski pleads with the Governor: "We ask that Governor Daniels do the right thing and stop work before any more injuries, fatalities, destruction of property and irreversible damage to valuable natural resources occur."

Bill Boyd, who farms in Greene County, states: "It is time to slow down. When you are in a rush, you make mistakes, people get hurt and their property gets destroyed. Governor Daniels will be leaving in a year, but we will be spending the rest of our lives here."

  1. Severe erosion in the right of way and drainage from the water table. An overpass, under construction, is seen at the horizon.
  2. This picture shows water bleeding from the base of one of the piers for the overpass seen in Picture 1. The soil is very thick mud.  A culvert next to the pier was also draining considerable amounts of water, presumably from the water table that was cut into.
